  18. QUESTION:  What could cause an itchy nipple?

  22. ANSWER:  When a woman who has a persistently itchy nipple, it could be nothing
  23. serious, but it might also be a symptom of the breast cancer called Paget's
  24. disease.
  25.      Even if there is no visible change, if you have this problem, you should
  26. have your doctor check it.  A physical examination and mammography (breast
  27. x-ray) can reveal any lumps or other causes for concern.  If you are pregnant,
  28. your doctor may choose to perform an ultrasound examination instead of
  29. mammography.  In addition, a small biopsy, performed under local anesthesia,
  30. can be done safely even if you are pregnant.
  31.      These tests will determine whether the cause of your itching nipple is
  32. benign, or provide the early detection of a more serious condition, so
  33. important for effective treatment.
